Over the next day and a half, Amy had plenty to keep her busy, from making doughnuts to catching up on laundry to writing letters home about her grand life in Montreal. Meg’s letters kept pestering her to send more details about the city and asking if Amy had been on any dates or if she was holding out for Fred. Interestingly, Meg had mentioned very little about John. Amy couldn’t exactly blame Meg for that, since she had called him a boring old fuddy-duddy, which made her groan looking back on it. But she’d been so angry! Meg always took Jo’s side. Amy would bet money that the two of them were swapping letters twice a week, sharing their secrets and all the gossip per usual.

Thank goodness she had Edie.

And Laurie.

Amy’s face flushed whenever she thought about him. She told herself that he hadn’t asked her on a real date and she’d be silly to think that was the case, but she couldn’t help but plan her outfit anyway. He did say to wear something nice. And so she asked Edie to curl her hair like Hedy Lamarr’s in Ziegfeld Girl, and she begged Gloria up on the third floor to borrow her aubergine dress with the sweetheart neckline.

She’d show Laurie that she definitely wasn’t a kid anymore.

But on the morning of her day off, Amy awoke to a sharp knock on the door. Scrambling out of bed, she opened it to find another Red Cross girl standing with a package in hand.

“This was left for you on the steps,” the girl said before hurrying off to start her shift.

Amy’s heart thumped at the sight when she realized that the package was from Laurie. Had he gotten her a gift? She ripped open the envelope taped to the box, giving the note inside a skim, and her stomach promptly plummeted toward the floor.

“Who was at the door?” Edie said with a yawn. When she saw the look on Amy’s face, she sat up straight. “Everything all right?”

Amy walked numbly toward Edie’s bunk. “Laurie got called up to the airfield. He received word about it last night and had to leave this morning,” she said, a swell of emotions overtaking her—surprise, shock, unease. Laurie was heading back into the cockpit. Back into danger.

“He’ll be all right. Our boys are the bravest in the world, and our planes are top-notch,” Edie assured her, although Amy couldn’t help but think about Edie’s cousin Bobby, who’d died at age nineteen. The US Navy, despite all its might, hadn’t been able to protect him.

“Would you two mind keeping it down a bit?” Marion said sleepily from her bed.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Edie muttered, although Marion didn’t hear her since she had already rolled over. To Amy, she said, “Look on the bright side—he got you a present! What do you think it could be? Not flowers. And that parcel is much too big for a ring.”

“Edith Barnett!” Amy said with a startled laugh. “He’s not even my beau.
